If you think it is morally urgent to end poverty and inequality in the world, NOW is the time to do something. Ordinary people like you and me can do something. And this is our chance.
GCAP-Philippines’ 50-50 campaign aims to get people to make a personal commitment to help end poverty. It is part of a global campaign that is called many names, among them “In My Name” which is an interactive mobilization project to support, build and give voice to anti-poverty mobilization around the world.
The idea is to get people through a variety of ways—it could be online, mobile phones, social networking sites, community radio, photography, video, etc. An online hub will be providing a variety of new ways for people to engage and link to existing campaigning actions and activities, and help build connections between people, coalitions and networks in the anti-poverty movement.
Your names, pledges and stories will be put in front of political leaders at key moments beginning this year up to 2015 to create a clear sense that people are actively pursuing change.
WHY ACT NOW?
The world has passed the halfway mark for meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)—the 8 international development goals that 189 United Nations member states have agreed to achieve by the year 2015. The goals halving extreme poverty, reducing maternal and child mortality rates, fighting diseases such as AIDS, sending all children to school, and improving access to water and sanitation. The MDGs aim to spur development by improving social and economic conditions in the world’s poorest countries.
Progress towards the MDGs has so far been uneven among countries. The Philippines is among those that are government, as well as lack of funds needed to meet the MDGs poses a serious challenge for the country’s anti-poverty efforts.
We call this campaign 50-50 to mark the fact that we are half the distance or half of the way to the MDGs. And we believe there are 50 Little Things you and I can do for 50 days to fast track the MDGs and help tackle poverty and inequality.
